Tung Oil, also known as China Wood Oil, is one of the most
important vegetable based drying oils in the world. Tung Oil is produced in China and
South America. The South American oil is usually lighter in color and higher in price.
Tung Oil has been used as a waterproofing material for shoes, umbrellas and silks. It has
also been used in soap and varnish. Tung Oil has also used in the manufacturing of
electronic circuit boards.
Although other drying oils can be substituted for Tung Oil, its unique properties
make it the preferred drying oil in the manufacture of paints, resins, coatings and inks.
Tung Oil is excellent for finishing and waterproofing raw wood, concrete and wall board.
Linseed Oil is the oldest known drying oil in the Western
hemisphere. Its long standing use in certain applications has made its displacement by
other drying oils nearly impossible. Linseed is used in the manufacturing of paints,
varnishes, enamels, lacquers, stains, printing inks, furniture polish and wall boards.
Oiticica Oil grows wild and only grows in Brazil. Oiticica
Oil finds limited use as a substitute for Tung Oil or Linseed Oil when the price of either
of these products prohibit their use. Oiticica Oil is much darker in color and is
susceptible to transforming into a pasty, semi-solid state at room temperature. This
requires heating prior to use.
Dehydrated Castor Oil is lighter than Tung Oil or Linseed
Oil. It can be used to improve the quality of house paints, enamels, caulks, sealants and
inks. This oil also works well in clear varnishes and hard finish coatings.
Dehydrated Castor Oil can be converted to Dehydrated Castor
Fatty Acid by hydrolysis and distillation. It can be used I the
manufacture of alkyd resins, can coatings, appliance finishes, primers and inks.
